Mission
The Les Chats Basketball Club has been established for the purpose of allowing girls to improve their basketball skills, and play at a competitive level of sports. The club is open to anyone regardless of race, ethnicity or background. Our primary mission is to use Basketball as a platform to academic and self excellence. Research has shown that kids who are active in sports fare better academically and have better self-esteem of themselves vs kids that do not participate in sports. They are also less likely to be involved in destructive habits.
Les Chats History
The Les Chats Basketball Club was founded in the spring of 2004, as a 6th grade girls competitive basketball team. In the summer of 2005 a 4th grade girls team was added an in 2007 a 2nd grade team formed. Based in the Kansas City suburb of Overland Park, the club currently has a 6th grade girls team and a 2nd grade girls team. The older team founded in 2004 has moved on to successfully play with their high school. The teams continue to be challenged through intense practices and league and/or tournament play against older competition. The 6th graders play at both the 6th,7th and 8th grade level. The 2nd graders currently play 2nd and 3rd grade level.
The hallmark of the Les Chats teams is individual skill development both defensive and offensive. The expectation is for all players to be the best basketball that they can be at both ends of the court.
Les Chats Basketball is committed to player development and the philosophy is to provide opportunities for girls to develop as basketball players.
We hope to accomplish this by playing all year round thereby providing the young athletes a stable and uninterrupted training schedule. We also allow for breaks during the season to allow the young athletes sufficient time to recuperate.
We also strongly believe that young athletes should continue to pursue other interests and or sports. Our schedules are reasonably flexible to allow for this to be a reality
The results have been very flattering with several top finishes at major local and regional tournaments, including 2nd and 3rd place finishes for the 5th graders at the 2006 nationals and (2) final four appearances as well as a sweet sixteen appearance for the 8th graders at nationals.
Our greatest results have been the performance of the girls at school. All of our players are expected to maintain at least a B average, and several are actually straight A students.
Les Chats basketball club will seek the most competitive tournaments for its teams. As such we play in all major basketball events including MAYB, AAU, USJN, USSSA and several local tournaments.

Parent’s Section – Some suggestions
- Parents, how can you help? The saying goes…”You can take a horse to the river but you cannot force it to drink”.
- Reinforce, reinforce, reinforce the key concepts below, just like you do in school.
- Set game goals and avoid providing an outlet for excuses.
- Typical game goal for 10 minutes of court time – 3 rebounds, 3 steals/deflections/ Less than I turnover (20 per game for team = .5 per minute or 5 per 10 minute or 1per player for 10 mins).
- Make sure she accounts for her time on the court – no excuses about not getting the ball.
- Ask how you can help the team since your precious one is on the team.
- Avoid player comparisons – what you see is not necessarily accurate. Players develop at different rates and contribute differently. Have a knowledgeable person watch her play if you need good unbiased feedback.
- Set individual goals that you can track – (take her out to the backyard) track FGM/FGA, Left handed lay-ups, Vertical jump, FTM/FTA, Dribbling.
- Make use of club shooting machine.
